Nine countries are official candidates to join the EU. Four gained candidate status after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.
1 + 5 + 3: Turkey; five in the Western Balkans (North Macedonia, Montenegro, Serbia, Albania, Bosnia and Herzegovina); three in the east (Ukraine, Moldova, Georgia).
Candidates long before the rest: Turkey from 1999 and North Macedonia from December 2005.
Western Balkan states made candidates between 2010 and 2014: Montenegro in December 2010, Serbia in March 2012 and Albania in June 2014.
Made candidates after Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine: Ukraine and Moldova in June 2022, Bosnia and Herzegovina in December 2022, Georgia in December 2023.
