Five post-war Chancellors went on to become Prime Minister
This list counts everyone who served as Chancellor of the Exchequer and then became Prime Minister for the first time after 1945. Five people qualify: two who reached the top job between the 1950s and the 1970s, and three since 1990. Four of the five became Prime Minister in the same year they left the Treasury. The other waited more than eight years. The steps after the full list split the five into those who reached Downing Street before 1990 and those who did so from 1990.
