The Governor runs the Bank of England, the UK's central bank. This list starts with the appointment made in 1973 and runs to the present Governor, who took office on 16 March 2020. The four Governors appointed between 1973 and 2003 each served ten years, and the fifth served just under seven. In May 1997 the Bank gained operational independence to set interest rates, and that date divides the list: three Governors were appointed before it and three after. The one whose term ran across 1997 is grouped by the year he was appointed. The steps after the full list split the six by whether they were appointed before or after independence.
