Nineteen people have been Prime Minister since July 1945
The Prime Minister heads the UK government. Since the post-war Labour government took office on 26 July 1945, nineteen people have held the job. Two of them served two separate spells and are counted once each, and one of those two had first been Prime Minister during the war. The shortest tenure was 49 days, in 2022. The office last changed hands on 20 July 2026, when one Labour Prime Minister resigned and another succeeded him the same day. The steps after the full list group them by era.
