Every UN Secretary-General

Name every Secretary-General of the United Nations

Nine people have been Secretary-General of the United Nations since 1946

The Secretary-General runs the UN Secretariat and is the organisation's chief administrative officer. The General Assembly makes the appointment on the recommendation of the Security Council, where any of the five permanent members can block a candidate with a veto. A term is normally five years. Nine people have held the post since the first appointment in 1946, and no woman has yet been one of them. One died in office in 1961, and one was refused a second term by a veto in 1996. The current Secretary-General's second term ends on 31 December 2026, and the choice of a successor to take office on 1 January 2027 was still under way in early October 2026.

Name them all first. Then try the harder part: name them in two eras, before and after the end of the Cold War.
