Twenty-nine countries make up the Schengen area
The Schengen area is the group of European countries that have removed checks on people at the borders between them. It takes its name from the village where the first five members signed an agreement in June 1985, and their border checks came down on 26 March 1995. As of 1 October 2026 it has 29 members: 25 of the 27 EU members and four countries outside the EU. The newest members joined in stages and became full members on 1 January 2025. One of the two EU members still outside has been assessed as ready but awaits a decision by EU governments, so the list may grow.
Name them all first. Then split the 29 by when each joined.
