Twelve people have run the IMF, and all of them were European
The managing director heads the International Monetary Fund's staff and chairs its Executive Board, which appoints the managing director for a five-year term. Twelve people have held the post since the first was appointed in 1946. All twelve have been European, under a long-standing convention that a European leads the Fund while an American leads the World Bank, and five of them have been French. Several left before their term was up: one died in office, one resigned to become his country's president, one resigned after his arrest in New York in 2011, and one left in 2019 to lead the European Central Bank. The current managing director began a second five-year term on 1 October 2024.
Name them all first. Then try the harder part: name them in three eras.
