Four countries formed BRIC in 2009, and a fifth joined in 2010
BRIC began as a label before it was a bloc. Goldman Sachs first used the grouping of four economies in 2001. The four governments turned it into an intergovernmental bloc at the first BRIC summit, held in Yekaterinburg in June 2009. In December 2010 a fifth country was invited to join, and BRIC became BRICS; that country first attended as a member at the Sanya summit in 2011. This list is fixed at those five. The countries that joined from 2024 onwards belong to a different list, with its own module.
