Can you name the five biggest economies? Total GDP in US dollars at market exchange rates, not per person, in any order.
The United States and China are far ahead of the rest. Germany is third and Japan fourth. The United Kingdom is fifth and India sixth, only just behind it.

Britain holds fifth place by a margin one release could erase
The United Kingdom is only just ahead of India. Every figure here is converted into dollars at the market exchange rate, so a fall in the pound or a rise in the rupee can change the order even when neither economy has produced more or less.
At purchasing-power parity the order changes
Market exchange rates ignore the fact that the same sum buys more in some countries than in others. The World Bank and the IMF also publish GDP at purchasing-power parity (PPP), which values every country's output at a common set of prices. On that measure the ranking changes and India rises to third. Neither measure is wrong: market rates suit comparing what countries can buy from each other, PPP suits comparing how much they actually produce.
An answer that ranks countries names its measure first
State which GDP you mean before you compare countries: total or per person, market exchange rates or PPP. In an evaluation of the UK's economic standing, give its rank on one measure, then explain why another measure would change it. The distinction is the analysis; the rank on its own is description.
Total output puts large, populous economies first; divide by population and the list changes completely.
