Seven people have led the WTO since it opened in 1995
The Director-General runs the World Trade Organization's Secretariat in Geneva. Member governments, meeting as the General Council, choose the Director-General by consensus for a four-year term that can be renewed. Seven people have held the post since the WTO came into being on 1 January 1995. The first had already been running GATT and stayed on for four months. In 1999 members could not agree on a single candidate, so they split six years between two people, neither allowed a second term. The WTO has also twice gone months with nobody in the post, in 1999 and again from September 2020 to February 2021. The current Director-General began a second four-year term on 1 September 2025.
Name them all first. Then try the harder part: name them in three periods.
